Skull Cross Helmet Ring Ø21 (16251-21) is an expressive signet ring combining vanitas symbolism with the iconography of medieval knightly orders. The main form of the ring is reminiscent of a crusader’s battle helmet, from which emerges an anatomically stylized skull – a motif that reminds us of transience, death, but also of the strength of spirit and steadfastness of the warrior. In the central part is placed a black Maltese cross, performing a heraldic function and giving the whole a mystical overtone.
The use of black enamel in the recesses enhances the contrast with the silvery surface, creating an effect of drama and depth. The sculpture has been precisely worked out – recessed eye sockets, detailed teeth, sharp edges of the helmet – all this creates a composition maintained in the Gothic-military style , firmly rooted in the spiritual tradition of Christian orders of war.
